It feels like a modern evolution of the original art style. I really don't get why people are so bothered by it. You're either going to love it or hate it. Monkey Island is easily one of my favourites. My childhood is full of fond memories of Space Quest, Maniac Mansion, Police Quest, Leisure Suit Larry, Loom and, of course, Monkey Island.
